Did you know that braces aren’t just good for straightening your teeth, but they are good for your oral health as well? Essentially, a straight smile allows you to better clean your teeth and gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Since our Drs. Toenjes, Brizzee and Orme team in St. Anthony, Idaho offers braces for our patients who are looking to align their smile, let’s take a closer look at what braces can do for your pearly whites.
- Overbites: With an overbite, your upper teeth end up biting over your bottom teeth. If this is uncorrected, gum irritation along with the wearing down of the lower teeth may result, potentially causing painful jaw and joint problems.
- Underbites: If your lower teeth protrude past your front teeth, you can have issues with the normal function of your front teeth and your molars. Left untreated, you may experience painful jaw and joint pain.
- Open bites: When a few of your teeth don’t meet the opposite teeth, you may not be able to chew correctly. Left untreated, you can end up with problems with your speech or pain when you chew, resulting in TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).
- Crossbites: If your jaws are both misaligned, you will have a crossbite. If one or more of your upper teeth continually hit the inside of the lower teeth, it will cause wear and tear on tooth enamel and lead to gum disease and eventually bone loss.
- Spacing: Braces effectively correct the spacing that occurs when there is too much space between your teeth. This can affect your ability to chew properly.
- Crowding: Braces correct crowding (when there isn’t enough space between teeth). Because crowding limits your ability to effectively brush and floss your pearly whites, you are at increased risk for tooth decay and gum disease.
- Midline Discrepancy: Braces can correct the misalignment of your upper and lower teeth. Left untreated, a midline discrepancy can cause pain in the jaw and bring on other dental issues.
