Adding Mouthwash into Your Daily Dental Care

Posted .

Brushing twice a day and flossing daily should already be part of your dental care regimen, but another great addition is mouthwash. Although not a replacement for any of the previous, it is like these because it is able to get in between the teeth and gums. Mouthwash is even more affective because it can get further than both as a liquid.

By reaching these areas, it can reduce the risk of getting infections or diseases. Mouthwash can also help by:

– Preventing/controlling tooth decay,
– Preventing/reducing gingivitis (early form of gum disease),
– Reducing plaque buildup, speed of tartar (hardened plaque),
– Freshening your breath.

Two different of mouthwashes include therapeutic and cosmetic. Therapeutic mouthwashes have consistently active ingredients that help reduce plaque, gingivitis, cavities, and bad breath. Those with fluoride help prevent tooth decay. These sometimes need a prescription, but most are available over-the-counter. Cosmetic mouthwashes can temporarily reduce bad breath, but don’t actually reduce your risk of infections such as cavities or gum disease.
